Appearance[]

You're looking at it rationally.

Sapphire has a slender build, light blue skin, dark blue eyes, a pointed, upturned nose and thin lips. She is 5' 6.5" in height and weighs 111 lbs. Her mouth and tongue are blue. She has sky blue hair with two large bangs and a fringe that covers her entire forehead, tied back into a ponytail by a blue band and clipped by a yellow, star-shaped barrette. She wears a sleeveless blue and white top that exposes her belly button. She wears turquoise shorts that are laced with two large blue and white frills that mimic a skirt. She also wears a blue choker that fits closely around her neck. Her shoes are turquoise ankle boots with teal soles. She wears cotton puffs on her forearms and just above her shoes like legwarmers. Sapphire is usually drawn without eyelashes or pupils, although they have been seen in some close-ups. Sapphire's gem is situated on her chest, and it is shaped like a teardrop. When Sapphire blushes, she blushes dark blue.

History[]

Frankly, the Diamonds don't seem much to brag about. I mean, look at the state they left us in, with the war, the broken planet. Clearly, they didn't care about what would happen to me.

Over 5,750 years ago, Sapphire lived on Homeworld, as an aristocratic Gem and part of Blue Diamond's court. As a Sapphire, she was valued very highly because of her ability to see into the future. Even when she first emerged, she had a history of rage issues and violent impulses that ruined her attempts to fit into society. Blue Diamond treated Sapphire very roughly, paying little attention to her grievances and complaints and scornfully commenting on her defective nature, and imprisoned her after finding out she withheld information from her. Other Gems treated her with condescension and saw her as a "useless seed" who cared little about her culture. Sapphire also knew another Sapphire, whom she was not fond of. After Gems arrived on Earth, Sapphire ran off with no particular goal in mind, until she met Rose Quartz and her crew. While Rose viewed Sapphire as a friend and possibly a spiritual sister who could understand her and her ways, Sapphire viewed Rose as an insane liability with special uses. Having no other choice, she made a deal with Rose in exchange for protection. If Sapphire served Rose, she would provide her with a new identity and a home for her on Earth. Thus, Sapphire and Rose created a chagrined relationship and partnership, due to their mutual hatred of each other. They did not trust or like each other, but Sapphire got along with Pearl at some point. She planned to cut Rose and Garnet off and work solely with Pearl, which created some friction between them. Sapphire and Garnet's relationship was very antagonistic, as Sapphire's self-reliant outlook on life meant that she looked down on Garnet for being a fusion. When she first met Garnet, she referred to her as a "person who is trying to ignore some rather large mistakes that they have made." Since Sapphire became a Crystal Gem for self-satisfaction, she didn't take Rose's rebellion very seriously. Her boredom inspired her to take actions that would incite more hatred against Homeworld, in the hopes of being able to start more rebellions. Enraged beyond sense, Sapphire made her escape during the historic battle at the Strawberry Battlefield. She was never caught by the police and eventually went into hiding.

Personality[]

"My momma never loved me. My friends never loved me. I'm mad because I'm rich. I'm sad because I'm successful." Why?

Sapphire is ruthless, psychotic and unstable. She has a strong fixation upon "justice", originating her fear of being seen as weak, knowing that, on Homeworld, if she became dead weight she'd be taken out to keep her silent. This has a lingering effect of her upbringing, as she almost did suffer this fate. This has led her to take drastic actions to prove herself. She has a twisted sense of right and wrong, bordering on a completely black and white view of the world. To see the world in black and white is to live within the contours of extremism. This outlook neatly divides the world into right versus wrong, good versus evil, and yes versus no. This thinking is dependent upon such words as always and never. Especially in times of crisis, the black and white worldview is looked upon as strength and courage to the casual observer. Black and white thinking makes up a good portion of Sapphire. It does not require much analysis for her to determine who is the “good guy” and who is the “bad guy.” She portrays herself in myriad roles as a clear thinking Gem of action. She has little use for nuance; and once a decision is made that is it. Though appearing to be the best choice in the short term, black and white thinking can bring about long-term negative consequences. For Sapphire, the problem with black and white thinking is that it usually does battle in a world that is nuanced and gray. Black and white thinking causes her to show little appreciation for the concept of self-reflection. Cognitive analysis begins in black and white terms, this is how Sapphire learns to use words and organizes her thoughts. In the world of black and white, Sapphire can become overwhelmed with the desire to find “the” answer, and trying to understand the “why” question. For all of the obvious short - term reasons to embrace black and white thinking, there is definite a downside. Her black and white thinking is flawed because she inherently assumes a static world. Sapphire is dependent upon everything and everyone maintaining the role that such thinking has already preordained. She has little regard for humans, because black and white thinking is rooted more toward the generic than the situational. Failure becomes harder to confront because Sapphire tends to place an inordinate amount of energy being right. It is an unfortunate default against the complexities of the world. Overall, taking into account her simplistic view of the world and sometimes childish behavior, Sapphire has quite an immature personality with a streak of emotional instability.

Abilities[]

NewSpear

Sapphire's spear.

What happens in the dark, comes out in the light.

Sapphire possesses superhuman reflexes, as well as superhuman endurance. She was expertly hardlined to exceed normal physical abilities, especially her resistance to pain. Thanks to her training, Sapphire is almost immune to pain, being able to endure massive amounts of attacks without flinching. She has a lot of physical strength, and can withstand a lot of bodily harm without having to return to her gem to regenerate damage taken. Sapphire is also superbly athletic, featuring acrobatic capabilities, speed, and reflexes that far exceed many others, which enables her to perform a variety of flips, rolls, cartwheels, and parkour maneuvers with extreme precision and efficiency. Because of this, she is fast and agile in battle, able to outmaneuver almost any opponent she comes across and jump exceptionally high and far, even from a stationary position. She is also limber; able to twist, bend, and contort herself into positions nearly impossible for an ordinary person to achieve. These abilities also grant her impressive parkour and free-running skills, allowing her to scale almost any surface or terrain quickly and squeeze through most barriers and small spaces with noticeable ease. She uses stealth in battles, waiting for her enemy to get close before killing them in a single hit. She excels at deception to trick people and let their guard go down. She is able to persuade anyone of anything pretty much. Her greatest strength is her manipulative personality; she is a master of corrupting others and misguiding them. She is a master of psychological manipulation, a master planner, a cunning strategist, and has skills in disguise and ritual magic. She is also very ruthless in battle. She can think straight in a deathly battle and kill enemies without remorse while having a clear mind. Sapphire is a great strategist and tactician, always calculating her opponents' moves beforehand. Using her superior problem-solving skills, Sapphire can work out a battle ahead of time for many possibilities and predict enemy movements and tactics after the battle has engaged by recalling and utilizing memorized mannerisms acquired through past experience on a moment's notice. By deducing one's strengths and weaknesses, Sapphire is able to hold her own, if not outright overpower superpowered opponents.

She is highly skilled in various fighting styles of hand-to-hand combat and kickboxing as well, possessing great physical strength. She is a capable and powerful fighter with remarkable speed and reflexes, being able to dodge and counter-attack with deadly results. The speed at which she reacts allows her to dodge fast-moving projectiles such as arrows and bullets. She is also skilled in hand to hand combat, knowing an array of martial arts moves. Her fighting style incorporates various styles in stand up striking, doing take downs, kicks, grapples, and ground fighting. She tends to use a lot of acrobatics in her moves, with many of her melee attacks featuring flips and cartwheels. She's able to perform muscle ups with little to no effort, and she possesses incredible leg strength which she utilizes in combat and environment traversal, such as the various flips, kicks, grapples, and submissions used when fighting enemies, or jumps, rolls, handsprings, and pull-ups when climbing or traversing. She also has a strong sixth sense, being able to sense killing intent, even at long distances. She is perfectly able to sense that someone is spying on her. She also gives off no killing intent at all when she fights, making it difficult for the enemy to sense her presence. Also, her sense of smell is strong. Her good hearing also lets her anticipate what's coming more accurately, allowing her to anticipate incoming attacks more accurately before they hit. She can hear what's going on from a long distance away, and decipher what it really is even if she can't see it. She is also skilled in infiltration and intelligence gathering. She remains calm and collected during an encounter and mentally coaches herself. She is thoughtful and fights with precision and coordination. She is analytical and tactical when in battle, waiting for the right moment to strike and retreating when circumstances are not favorable.

Fusions[]

Main article: Fusion Gems

Standard Gem Abilities[]

  • Light Emission: Sapphire can illuminate light from her gemstone, like a flashlight. She can use her gem to light the way or light up dark places.
  • Bubble Creation: Sapphire can encapsulate gemstones and other objects in Gem bubbles.
  • Pocket Dimension: Sapphire can put items inside her gem for safe keeping, and can summon them back with relative ease.
  • Shapeshifting: Sapphire has the ability to morph into many different sizes and shapes, and can become elastic or hardened into a form stronger than steel.
  • Regeneration: When Sapphire is seriously injured, she will retreat into her gemstone to regenerate. Less serious injuries can cause scratches and bruises without forcing regeneration. Sapphire can quickly recover from these sorts of injuries.
  • Fusion: Sapphire can fuse with other Gems through dance. She can form Phosphophyllite when she fuses with Pyromorphite, and Charoite when she fuses with Coral and Spessartine.
  • Inhuman Nature: Sapphire cannot die by any natural cause, and does not have to eat and sleep to survive. She has attempted to kill herself in many different ways and nothing worked.
    • She, however, drinks liquids that she enjoys. She doesn't eat solid food; she only drinks fluids. She would eat, if it weren't for the process of digestion.
  • Badass Adaptation: Sapphire is engineered to adapt to a variety of conditions.
    • Gravitation Adaptation: Her body will automatically alter itself to fit the conditions of whatever planet she's on, including adjusting mass for gravity.
    • Space Survival: She has the ability to survive in the vacuum of space without protection or survival gear (including any breathing apparatus).
    • Radiation Immunity: She is naturally immune and resistant to high levels of radiation.
  • Weapon-Summoning: By gathering her resolve and thirst for battle, Sapphire is able to summon her weapon; a pearly spear.

Special Abilities[]

  • Future Vision: Sapphire can see multiple future outcomes and probabilities, this ability is rare among Gems, enough so to place Sapphire in Blue Diamond's court. This includes extremely unlikely and ridiculous outcomes. The ability does take some time to use. During that time, someone can alter the future. Her future vision operates at will and with only specific details that she is looking for.
    • Power Transfer: She can temporarily pass on her future vision ability to others through lip contact.
  • Invisibility: Sapphire can render herself unseen by the naked eye and become invisible in the visible spectrum. She can move about an environment and act without being observed. Sapphire's ability is limited in scope, however, and extends only to her own body. Her gemstone, anything she is carrying, and clothes not a part of her form does not become invisible.
    • Power Transfer: If she is touching somebody else, she can turn them invisible as well.
  • Holographic Projection: Sapphire can project holographic images from her gemstone, which she uses mainly to show something. She can invoke living holograms as well, which can interact with solid matter and function without Sapphire's presence.
    • Self-Duplication: Sapphire can also replicate herself several times into hologram-esque clones of herself, which can mimic her movements.
    • Holographic Memory: Sapphire is able to project the memories of herself and others with her gem. Memories are shown as Sapphire remembers them, so they may not be truthful.
  • Nubikinesis: Sapphire has enormous power over clouds, allowing her to raise and control their flow to use to her advantage, both offensively and defensively.
    • Nephelokinesis: Sapphire is able to channel clouds in the direction of her choice, and able to gather clouds around her to create a fine mist, reducing visibility and able to quickly dissipate it.
    • Aerokinesis: Sapphire is able to generate a cloud-like gas and manipulate it for a variety of effects.
      • Cloudportation: By manipulating the gas, Sapphire can ride the gas to enable her to fly. She can fly at varying speeds, or propel herself without taking flight, including enhanced jumping by a short burst of flight.
      • Suffocation: By forcing this generated gas down the throat of an opponent, Sapphire is able to keep them from breathing.
    • Cloudshaping: Sapphire can mold clouds into tools, objects, weapons, other items, and create structures/buildings of varying permanence. She can use this ability for almost any situation, creating virtually anything she needs or desires.
    • Condensation: Not only can Sapphire condense clouds into a usable source of water when she is within close range of one, but she also can condense invisible water vapor right out of the air. Favorable environment and climatic conditions increase the amount of water Sapphire can remove from the air.
    • Cloud Mimicry: Sapphire can create cloud-based clones of any person or Gem. The clone can copy the abilities of their opponent (being much stronger than the original), can also be divided, and change its shape to prevent attacks more easily.
  • Hydro-Locomotion: Sapphire can walk or run on the surface of water by literally defying the surface tension and can move across the surface of water as easily as she would be able to move on land.
  • Nocturnal Vision: Sapphire has excellent night vision. She can see vividly in low light conditions or even total darkness.

Other Skills[]

  • Weapon Proficiency: Sapphire is very skilled in the art of spear-wielding. She is a quite graceful fighter who uses swift and precise movements. She moves gracefully and swiftly, attacking with grace and poise. Sapphire is generally fast and fluid in her attacks, her moves carefully considered and choreographed. She stays calm and collected during melee battles, duels, and skirmishes. She is thoughtful and fights with precision and coordination.
    • Energy Projection: Sapphire can fire arrow-like blasts of energy from the tip of her spear. This can be done as rapid-fire, or charged to unleash a more powerful blast.
    • Dual-Wielding: Sapphire is able to dual-wield spears in battle, which she uses with deadly accuracy and an almost-superhuman speed.
    • Marksmanship: Sapphire also has great skill in throwing her spear, able to skillfully hit targets from a distance. Her aim is extremely accurate, even if she or the target is moving.
  • Swordsmanship: Sapphire possesses expert knowledge and skill with a sword. Sapphire's parries are tight and minimalist, her offense is a pattern that is specific to the environment. This pattern consists of lunges, thrusts, and horizontal slashes.
  • Pianism: Sapphire is a skilled piano player. She can play a wide variety of repertoire and styles, including traditionally classical music, jazz, blues and all sorts of popular music, including rock music. Sapphire, to a certain extent, can play other keyboard-related instruments such as the synthesizer, harpsichord, celesta and the organ.
  • Chi Blocking: Another of Sapphire's defining abilities is her mastery of pressure-point-striking martial arts, or chi blocking. With her extensive knowledge of the human body, she can strike sequences of pressure points, immobilizing her enemies to various degrees. She has the ability to paralyze a single body part or an opponent's entire body.

Gemology[]

Sapphire gem

Pear-shaped blue sapphire.

Gemstone Information
  • Sapphire is the traditional birthstone of September. As for the zodiac, it is regarded as the stone for Taurus.
    • Historically, it was the birthstone of April.
    • The sapphire is the traditional gift for a forty-fifth wedding anniversary.
    • Sapphire is the national gemstone for the United States and Greece.
  • Throughout history, sapphire has symbolized truth, sincerity and loyalty.
    • In times of antiquity and the Middle Ages, the term sapphire actually referred to lapis lazuli, but in the early nineteenth century, the description and definition of sapphire was changed to the corundum variety we know today.
  • Sapphire is typically very durable, and considered to be one of the hardest materials on earth.
    • It is the second hardest substance on earth after diamond, rating 9 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness.
    • Because of the remarkable hardness of sapphires – 9 on the Mohs scale (the third hardest mineral, after diamond at 10 and moissanite at 9.5) – and of aluminium oxide in general, sapphires are used in some non-ornamental applications.
  • Sapphire is a member of the corundum family and is closely related to ruby; the red to pink-red gem-quality variety of corundum.
    • Most corundum is opaque to translucent and heavily included, suitable only for industrial use, including the production of abrasives used for sandpaper and machining of metal, plastics and wood.
    • Corundum itself is not a very rare mineral, but gem quality corundum is extremely rare.
    • Since ruby is a member of the corundum group, it is closely related to sapphire and thus shares some properties, such as hardness, composition and double refraction, with sapphire.
  • While blue is the most traditional and classic color for sapphire, sapphire is actually found in a variety of different colors. Today, all colors of gem quality corundum are known as sapphire, with exception to red corundum, which is classified as ruby.
    • Sapphire colors are best viewed under natural daylight. In artificial or incandescent light, sapphire colors can appear darker and inky black-blue.
    • Trace amounts of elements such as iron, titanium, chromium, copper, or magnesium can give corundum respectively blue, yellow, purple, orange, or green color.
    • Colored sapphire (other than blue) is often referred to as fancy sapphire, and fancy sapphire is typically traded using color-specific names, such as yellow sapphire, green sapphire or purple sapphire.
