"Jasper" is a Gem hailing from Homeworld. She is the main antagonist of her debut episodes, "The Return" and "Jail Break". She is currently stuck at the bottom of Earth's ocean, fused with Lapis Lazuli as Malachite.

Appearance[]

Jasper has light tangerine orange skin with darker orange markings on her face along with long, thick white flowing hair similar toAmethyst. Her gemstone is located where her nose otherwise would be. She also has a muscular frame, being by far the most physically imposing non-fusion Gem seen thus far, an indication of her immense strength and durability. She wears a pale red tank top with a mahogany V-neck collar that connect to form a Yellow Diamond emblem, mahogany leggings, and red boots with brown tips.

Personality[]

Jasper is very ruthless and headstrong, as well as being an aggressive combatant. As a high ranking Gem warrior and a veteran of the Crystal Gem rebellion, Jasper comes off as very authoritative and militaristic; something that directly affects her subordinates, Peridot and Lapis Lazuli. She pays them little attention, doesn't heed their warnings or concerns, and will not hesitate to browbeat them into submission if they complain or disagree with her. The importance she puts on one's own battle prowess also leads her to look down upon any whom she considers to be a weakling and she despises the act of fusion specifically, as per her remark that "Fusion is just a cheap tactic to make weak Gems stronger!"

Her attitude towards those whom she considers to have proven themselves in battle, however, is a much more positive and respectful one. When she first arrived on Earth, she quickly dismissed Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl as weaklings not worth her time. She did, however, express disappointment when she found out that Rose Quartz wasn't present because she wanted to face her in battle as she respected her as the military commander of the rebellion. Likewise, this caused her to be confused and frustrated as to why Rose had apparently shape-shifted into a "weak human boy" to fight her.

As strong as her personal convictions are, they are not unbreakable; the prospect of a humiliating defeat at the hands of the Crystal Gems proved to be too much for her. In a last desperate attempt to seize victory, she coerced Lapis Lazuli to fuse with her to form the fusion gem, Malachite, apparently disregarding her previous opinion on fusion gems.

Abilities[]

Jasper's Comet Charge

Jasper Comet Charge

Like all Gems, Jasper can shape-shift, fuse, summon a weapon, and retreat to her

gemstone to regenerate. She possesses an incredible amount of physical strength and stamina, making her the most physically imposing non-fusion Gem seen thus far.

Jasper's Helmet

Jasper's Helmet

Skillset[]

  • Weapon Proficiency: Crash Helmet: By gathering her resolve and thirst for battle, Jasper is able to summon her weapon; a tangerine crystalline helmet. The helmet acts both as a weapon and armor; a hammer-like protrusion in the front of the helmet allows her to use it to charge, slam and headbutt her opponent, while a clear visor extends down, covering the upper part of her face in order to protect her eyes and gemstone. The strength of the helmet rivals that of Garnet's gauntlets, as Jasper was shown continuously countering her attacks.

Unique Abilities[]

  • Comet Charge: Jasper can lunge at her foes with alarming speed and power, as evidenced by the attack breaking through layers of hard gemstone. While she performs this attack an orange aura, much like her spin dash, appears to form around her. She performs this attack during her fight with Garnet, when she rams her through the floor into the ship's power generator room.
  • Spin Dash: Jasper can rapidly roll in a ball-like shape to attack enemies. While Amethyst was shown to have this ability as well, it seems that Jasper's version is more powerful, as indicated by the aura around her when performing that move.

Unarmed Combat[]

  • Martial Arts: Further reflecting the similarities between herself and Amethyst, Jasper is likewise prone to mixing up her weapon-based attacks with martial arts moves such as grappling, throwing, or simply punching her opponent. Due to the nature of her weapon, the two styles mixes seamlessly and combines into a powerful, but ultimately reckless fighting style, which, much like that of  Sugilite, is prone to causing a lot collateral damage. She also shares a few special abilities with Amethyst for use in combat, although Jasper's versions seem to be more powerful and destructive.
  • Headbutt: Jasper is shown to be able to headset without her Crash Helmet. The only time Jasper is shown being able to headbutt without the Crash Helmet is when she headbutts Steven at the end of Part I. This version, although weaker than her Crash Helmet, has potential to knock out a human being, which Steven is shown locked up into the prison after he wakes up from the knockout.

Weaponry[]

  • Gem Destabilizer: Homeworld Gems, in addition to their summon-able weapon, seem to carry a personal defense weapon known as Gem De-stabilizers — extremely potent, "non-lethal" tools used to subdue enemy Gems by forcing them to retract back into their gemstone or gemstones.

Relationships[]

Crystal Gems[]

Due to the Crystal Gems being traitors who staged a rebellion against their Home-world, and the fact that Jasper fought on the side of the loyalist Gems in the conflict, her views on the Crystal Gems is naturally a negative one. She is eager to settle the score with them; so much so that she expresses disappointment in the fact that the three are all that is left of Rose's army. She initially considers them unworthy for her to fight personally and simply orders Peridot to "blast them with the ship."

Rose Quartz/Steven[]

Jasper holds some animosity towards Rose, as Jasper was present and fought for the loyalist Gem forces during Rose's rebellion on Earth. She was looking forward to "beating her into the ground" upon arriving on Earth because she never encountered her in the war and thus never had the chance to. Despite this, Jasper expresses a great deal of respect towards Rose for her role as the military commander of the rebellion.

Peridot[]

Jasper and Peridot seem to have some sort of tension between each other. Most of which seems to stem from the fact that Jasper was put in charge of taking care of Earth (making her Peridot's superior) as the Crystal Gems repeatedly hindered Peridot's efforts, forcing Peridot to report to her superior(s) and ask for additional help in the matter. In addition to that Jasper pays little attention to Peridot's grievances and complaints, possibly as a result of Jasper looking down on Peridot who is more of an intellectual technician than a warrior.

Lapis Lazuli[]

Jasper was put in-charge of Lapis after she returned to the Gem Homeworld and was forced into helping the Home-world Gems to defeat and capture the Crystal Gems. Jasper does not seem to care much for her new subordinate, as she is shown to grab her very roughly and having no problems with imprisoning her after finding out Lapis withheld information from her. Jasper also called Lapis a 'brat.' Their toxic relationship is supposed to contrast from Sapphire and Ruby's healthy relationship. When Jasper tried to coerce Lapis into fusing with her to stop the Crystal Gems, Lapis consented. The two of them formed Malachite, with Lapis' intent of using her Hydrokinesis to imprison both of them at the bottom of the ocean in order to save Steven.

Garnet[]

Jasper and Garnet's relationship is very antagonistic, as Jasper's self-reliant outlook on life means that she looks down on Garnet for being a fusion. When she first met Garnet, she referred to her as a "shameless display", implying she knew that Garnet was a fusion. Her defeat, at the hands of Garnet, pushes her to make the hypocritical decision to fuse with Lapis in order to get stronger. This rash decision led to her imprisonment at the bottom of the ocean.

Trivia[]

  • Jasper is the only known Gem to have a gemstone on their nose, other than Malachite.
    • Her gemstone is faceted onto a low point, making it look like a real nose.
  • Jasper can be considered an opposing counterpart to Rose Quartz.
    • Rose and Jasper both have the same hair-length, but while Rose's hair is soft and curly, Jasper's hair is wild and unkempt.
    • They both are of similar height and stature, with Jasper being more muscular than Rose, indicative of both of their respective natures.
    • Rose's combat style apparently focuses on defense, while Jasper's focuses on offense.
    • Rose is kind and serene, Jasper is savage and ill-tempered.
    • Rose fought against the Gem Home-world, while Jasper fought on its behalf.
    • This could be a hint to actual mineralogy, as jasper and quartz have the same chemical composition (silicon dioxide, colored by iron), but different internal structure.
  • Jasper was present during the Gem War 5,000 years prior, and fought against Rose's army.
    • Jasper also seeks vengeance against Rose ever since the Home-world's defeat on Earth.
  • Jasper has some similarities with Amethyst, including the long thick white hair and similar abilities.
  • Jasper fused with Lapis, creating Malachite. However, Lapis only agreed to do so that she could imprison Jasper at the bottom of the ocean off the coast of Beach City.
    • Jasper was the first and only Gem so far to fuse with Lapis.
    • She and Lapis are the only two Gems to fuse who aren't apart of the Crystal Gems.
  • Jasper seems to be the only non fused gem with visible pupils.
  • She references a Gem named Yellow Diamond, presumably being her and Peridot's superior or overseer.
  • Both Jasper's and Amethyst's Spin Dash are possibly inspired by the attack of the same name performed by the popular video game character, Sonic the Hedgehog.
  • Jasper is consistently shown to be left-handed.
